We are fortunate in having seven book groups and a poetry appreciation group in U3A Hobsons Bay/Williamstown. Each one is made up of lively, intelligent members and they find joy in sharing (respectfully) their views on what they have read with the rest of the group.
We would like to share with you on this forum some of the books we have enjoyed (or sometimes not), poems that have resonated and news and views on various form of literature.

This was the first question the newly formed Classic Novels Book Group had to answer at its inaugural meeting in February. And by the discussions which followed, I would tell that this was going to be a really interesting group. We kept the definition broad so not to limit our choices.

The Unquiet Grave by Dervla McTiernan

Like most police procedurals, Dervla McTiernan’s The Unquiet Grave follows the formula where a body is found, cause and time of death are determined by a pathologist and then the detectives search for a murderer, and eventually an explanation of the crime is revealed.

We Were Not Men by Campbell Mattinson

Two boys – Jon and Eden – identical twins, live a good life with their parents in Jubilee Street, Newport while regularly visiting their vigneron grandma – Bobbie – on a farm at Flowerdale. While a rupture over a romance between the boys is foreshadowed early, the real shock comes soon after, as they drive through a rainy night into the countryside.
